A brief update
It's been far too long since I've given the dogs a proper walk, let alone have had time to reflect while doing so.
Winter came back again, as expected. The snow cover grew to almost a foot over the last two weeks, and in our garden it's covered with rabbit tracks. They've been taking advantage of the added height it gives them to nibble at our berry bushes. Luckily, the buds we care about are closer to waist height than knee height, so managed to avoid their hunger.
The pond, for the last few weeks merely a gentle depression in a snow bank, has reappeared. The weather got warm enough the other day to thaw the pipe leading from the pump, and the flow of water has begun again. As for the fish, they're still under a few inches of ice so their status is still unknown.
As for the dogs, they enjoyed a walk that didn't involve knee-deep snow or salty slush, and look forward to the sticks they'll be able to dig out of the melting snow.
